Auf Tonight I’m Yours knüpfte Rod Stewart an zeitgenössische Musiktrends an – in Anlehnung an einige Disco-beeinflusste Titel auf Blondes Have More Fun und Foolish Behaviour –, indem er Elemente des Synth-Pop und der New Wave in den Titelsong und „Young Turks“ einfließen ließ. Das Album enthielt drei Coverversionen: „Tear It Up“, „How Long“ und „Just Like a Woman“.Der Song „Never Give Up on a Dream“ war dem kanadischen Sportler Terry Fox gewidmet, der im Rahmen des Marathon of Hope 3.339 Meilen auf einer Beinprothese lief, um Geld für die Krebsforschung zu sammeln. Fox starb 1981, im Jahr der Veröffentlichung des Albums, an Krebs.

Tonight I’m Yours saw Rod Stewart further embracing contemporary musical trends – following on from some disco-influenced tracks on Blondes Have More Fun and Foolish Behaviour – by incorporating elements of synth-pop and new wave into the title track and “Young Turks”. The album included three cover versions: “Tear It Up”, “How Long”, and “Just Like a Woman”.
The song “Never Give Up on a Dream” was dedicated to the Canadian athlete Terry Fox, who ran 3,339 miles on one prosthetic leg in the Marathon of Hope to raise money for cancer research. Fox died of cancer in 1981, the year the album was released.
The music video for “Tonight I’m Yours” was directed by Australian film director Russell Mulcahy.
