Throughout his long career, Sir Rod Stewart has recorded and released numerous duets, and has also frequently shared the stage with other stars of the music scene. The average Stewart fan will immediately think of Michael Bublé, Dolly Parton, Bonnie Tyler or even Elton John, amongst others.

One of the lesser-known duet performances took place in 1974 at the Odeon Cinema in Lewisham, London.

On 18 November 1974, the Faces played one of three consecutive concerts there, and in the audience was none other than Beatle Paul McCartney.

The Faces were accompanied at the time by a camera crew who were compiling footage for a planned (but never released) documentary entitled ‘Smiler’. The film crew followed Rod and the Faces to the Odeon Cinema for three nights and also took note of the famous spectator in the audience.

However, it wasn’t part of the plan for the Beatles’ bassist to end up on stage performing a song with the Faces. Yet, on a spontaneous whim, that’s exactly what happened.

The band had just finished their song “I Can Feel The Fire” and were still basking in the applause and cheers of the enthusiastic fans when Rod, with a brief wave of his hand, beckoned Paul and his wife Linda onto the stage. It probably took a bit of persuasion, but eventually the pair found themselves on stage amongst The Faces, and the trio – Rod, Linda and Paul – sang “Mine For Me”, a song Paul McCartney had written and released for Stewart’s solo album “Smiler”. Rod released the track on 4 November 1974 as the album’s second single. “Mine For Me” became something of an insider’s tip in the US charts, reaching number 91 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Whilst searching for footage of this historic performance, we unfortunately found nothing more than a short clip lasting about a minute. But of course, we don’t want to keep that from you.
