The Scottish national football team will play their third group match at the World Cup in Canada, Mexico and the USA this evening. Following a win (1–0 against Haiti) and a defeat against Morocco (0–1), the Bravehearts face five-time world champions Brazil tonight at midnight (CEST).
A mammoth task for manager Steve Clarke’s team – and not just when you look at their previous World Cup encounters. In their three World Cup matches to date, the Scots have had little to show for their efforts against the Brazilians.
In their first encounter in 1987, Scotland sensationally held the then defending champions to a goalless draw. However, the South Americans went on to win in 1982 (4–1), 1990 (1–0) and 1998 (2–1). And today?

Sir Rod Stewart, a die-hard fan of the Scots, expects the Bravehearts to face a very tough nut to crack. Speaking to the sports radio station Talk Sport, the singer said: “It’s going to be so, so difficult tonight. And how do you go about it? Do you try to take the lead? Or just defend? I don’t know. In any case, the odds aren’t in our favour; we all know that.”
He then praised the Scottish fans: “We have the best supporters in the world, there’s no doubt about that. They’ve made the whole of Scotland proud.”
He then grinned mischievously and added: “I love the fact that they’ve drunk Boston dry.”

Recently, media reports have been circulating claiming that the singer had to be given oxygen during his performance in Utah, sparking wild rumours about his health. Stewart had recently been forced to cancel several concerts due to an upper respiratory tract infection and problems with his voice, but travelled to Boston the very next day to watch Scotland’s opening World Cup match against Haiti live at the stadium. This was taken amiss by quite a few fans, and Rod used his interview on Talk Sport to set the record straight. “I really shouldn’t have gone to the Haiti match,” Rod said in hindsight. “I had to cancel the concert the day before because I’d lost my voice. But – and this is the truth – I didn’t want to let my two sons down. I’d promised them ever since the day they were born that we’d travel to a World Cup one day. And this year was simply the first time it was possible,” said Stewart. “I admit it wasn’t ideal, but I had to bite the bullet. And that’s what I did – for my boys.”
