Three days after his performance and lifetime achievement award at the American Music Awards, Sir Rod Stewart was back on stage at “his” Colosseum at Caesars Palace. Thursday's concert kicked off the last twelve shows of his 14-year run at Caesars. Five shows in the next few days, then another six in September and October.
But there was no sign of melancholy in the newly crowned AMA Award winner. Rod hopped across the stage as fit and energetic as ever and seemed to be having so much fun that he went 15 minutes over the usual 90-minute show.
Rod's decision to go into overtime may also have been due to the fact that he was still thinking fondly of last Monday's awards ceremony. “It was really a surprise for me that my children surprised me like that,” Sir Rod told his audience. He was every bit the proud father “Stew,” who undoubtedly enjoyed this very emotional moment immensely. The same goes for his performance of “Forever Young,” which was celebrated around the world in the days following the AMAs. And rightly so.
Of course, “Forever Young” couldn't be left off the set list at Caesar's. Speaking of which, the song selection in Vegas was the same one that accompanied us through Europe in recent weeks. Somewhat surprisingly, Sir Rod played “Sailing” as the final encore at the end of the show, a song that was never a big hit in the US and which he rarely includes in his US shows. “Love Train” also found its way back into the song selection for the first night in Sin City. Next show: Today!
