Glasgow's Hampden Park witnessed another one of those very special football moments yesterday, Sunday.
The semi-final of the Scottish League Cup saw the 448th edition of the traditional Glasgow city derby between Sir Rod's beloved Celtic and arch-rivals Rangers.
After a total of 120 heated minutes, it was clear: Celtic Football Club will advance to the final on 14 December at the same venue. The Hoops won a hotly contested match 3-1 after 120 minutes – after 90 minutes, the score between the two city rivals was still 1-1.
Celtic, with legendary manager Martin O'Neill in charge on the sidelines since Brendan Rodgers' resignation a week ago, came out firing on all cylinders from the start and gave Rangers little room to manoeuvre.
Much to the delight of guest Rod Stewart, who had travelled to Glasgow with his two sons Alastair and Aiden, Johnny Kenny put the Bhoys in Green ahead after 25 minutes.
However, Celtic missed several more chances as the game progressed. With Rangers player Thelo Aasgaard sent off in the 38th minute after a nasty tackle on Anthony Ralston, O'Neill's men looked like certain winners at half-time.
What else could happen against the decimated Rangers? Answer: a lot. The Hoops lost their rhythm a little after the break and were no longer as determined in attack as they had been in the first half.
This emboldened the Rangers, who were playing with one man down, and when Ralston blocked a shot with his arm shortly before the end, referee Nick Walsh awarded a penalty to the Gers. James Tavernier gave Celtic keeper Kasper Schmeichel no chance and scored from the spot to make it 1-1 (81') – much to the annoyance of Sir Rod, who was already feeling confident of victory in the stands.
In extra time, however, Rangers, now coached by German Danny Röhl (assistant coach under national coach Hansi Flick from August 2021 to September 2023), had nothing left to offer. Celtic veteran Callum McGregor restored the Hoops' lead in the 93rd minute, and Callum Osmand sealed the deal with the 3-1 in the 109th minute.
The celebrations began on the pitch and also in the stands among the Stewart clan in attendance. Celtic
will now face FC St. Mirren in the final on 14 December, who won 4-1 against FC Motherwell in the other semi-final on Saturday.
