It's just before 8 a.m. last Wednesday. On BBC Breakfast, Penny Lancaster is talking to journalist Charlotte Gallagher about the upcoming release of her book Someone Like Me when Sir Rod suddenly appears on screen.
‘Room service,’ he calls out, serving his wife, whom he has been married to since 2007, a carafe of water. He then casually sits down next to Penny on the sofa and chats in a relaxed atmosphere about his wife's book and looks back on his performance at the Glastonbury Festival in June.
‘I haven't read the book yet,’ Rod the Mod admits. And he adds with a grin, ‘That reminds me, she (Penny) hasn't read my book yet either.’ Rod Stewart's autobiography ROD was published in 2012. ‘Ask her why...,’ the singer adds with a mischievous smile.
Penny takes it in her stride and explains: ‘I think a couple at the stage of our relationship should find out about each other in other ways.’ She adds: ‘That's why Rod doesn't need to read my book.’
When Rod mentions his autobiography again, Penny points out to her husband that this interview is actually supposed to be about her book. But the reporter seizes the opportunity and veers away from the actual topic. Gallagher asks Rod about his impressions of his performance at Glastonbury in June.
‘When I played at Glastonbury, it wasn't just a concert. You see so much emotion. You get so much love back. But at first I was really worried. I wanted to get it right – the song selection, the choice of outfits, everything had to be just right,’ Sir Rod recalls. "And when it was over, my God, what a relief. We really let our hair down with the band afterwards, everyone was drunk, including Penny."
Sir Rod Stewart's performance was the most watched act at the entire Glastonbury Festival, as the interviewer noted again. ‘Yes, I heard about that,’ Rod nods, visibly proud. And Penny adds, ‘You've still got it!’
