Rod Stewart's mood is likely to have improved by now, especially as his club, Celtic, consolidated its lead in the Scottish Premiership with a goalless draw in today's city derby against arch-rivals Rangers. Just a few days ago, after the Hoops were knocked out of the Champions League play-offs by Kazakh club Kairat Almaty (2-3 on penalties), things looked very different.
‘Those were probably the worst two or three days in Scottish football since England beat us at Wembley in 1961,’ complained Scotland and Celtic fan Sir Rod on Talk Sport Radio a few days ago, referring to the elimination of his Bhoys in Green in Kazakhstan, but also to Rangers' 0-6 defeat in Bruges and the elimination of Aberdeen and the Hibs from the play-offs in the other European competitions.
It was clear in today's clash that both Celtic and Rangers were still reeling from last week's defeats. Accordingly, both sides approached the 447th edition of the Glasgow derby with caution. The only notable event in the first 45 minutes was an offside goal by Rangers defender John Souttar.
After the break, the game picked up pace, with Celtic in particular gaining the upper hand. However, clear-cut chances remained few and far between for both sides. In the end, the two arch-rivals played out a 0-0 draw – a result that Celtic can live with much better than Rangers, who have had their worst start to a season in 36 years.
