Rocker Rod shakes up the St. Augustine set list a little

When you go to a Sir Rod Stewart concert, you usually know what to expect. After all, the man has a repertoire of endless hits spanning over six decades to draw from. But every now and then, Sir Rod manages to surprise you with his song selection.

This happened once again in St. Augustine, a small town in Florida with a population of around 14,000.

The 81-year-old actually took his “regular” Tonight's The Night, a song that is never missing from a concert, out of the programme. But the substitutes' bench is also packed with top-class talent, of course, and so the “substitute” ‘You're In My Heart’ also completely won over the approximately 4,700 fans in the sold-out amphitheatre.

As did the entire evening, during which Sir Rod added three more songs to the set list: ‘Hot Legs’, ‘Mandolin Wind’ and ‘Some Guys Have All The Luck’.

Stewart was once again in top form at the open-air amphitheatre in the city founded by Europeans in 1556. The way the singer danced and jumped around the stage, you would have thought you were watching a teenager rather than an 80-year-old entertainer with a big nose and the same hairstyle he's always had.

Sir Rod also showed off his strong vocals, and if there were any wobbles here and there, they were concealed by his magnificent band.

Speaking of the band, the song interpretations by the boys in suits and the girls in sexy dresses are not only an integral part of a Stewart show, they are also becoming more and more fan favourites. Initially intended only as fillers during Stewart's costume changes, the songs now fit perfectly into the overall programme, not only giving Rod a moment to catch his breath, but also continuing to fire up the fans, if that is even necessary given the numerous hits coming thick and fast.

After about two hours, it was all over in St. Augustine and everyone made their way home happy. For Rod and his crew, the tour continues tomorrow, Saturday, with a performance in Atlantic City.
